Kachchh is a land of herding communities. Since, milk has been a surplus produce in the region, various earthen vessels for milk products were traditionally made by the potteers and used among other locals. The form of Dahi Handi gets inspired from Mangdi, a popular vessel which was used for storing chhaas or buttermilk.
