Light is a symbol of prosperity, positivity and hope. Lighting lamps is therefore a source of energy, expression of joy and a sign of good omen.
India has had a rich tradition of lighting oil lamps and so had Kutch. Oil lamps used to be a part of every house until the electric lights came in. There used to be mud houses traditionally in Kutch that didn’t have big open windows, making the inside of the houses relevantly dark. Therefore, there used to be small vacant spaces in the wall called Jaaro, where lit oil lamps were placed. Also, the most productive period for the Kumbhars is the time of Diwali when they make and sell maximum oil lamps. Industrial and other alternate materials have reduced the demand and consumption of locally made terracotta lamps.
Lit these lamps daily or occasionally but not just annually! Use any edible vegetable oil and feel the aura. When lit, they spread positivite ambience to your space!
